OPEN INNOVATION CHALLENGE
Borehole remote monitoring challenge
DEADLINE: Wednesday, December 1, 2021
IMPORTANT: Download POC template Read FAQ Webinar Audio
OBJECTIVE:
To design a sensor that will allow for remote monitoring of boreholes (hand pump/ motorised) via an online platform.
DESIGN CONSTRAINTS:
Sensor A – For mechanical hand pumps
Ability to monitor the functionality of India Mark II boreholes and report when water is not being pumped.
- Ability to monitor and measure water consumption.
Cost of the sensor (including firmware and installation components) cannot exceed N70,000.
Sensor to be securely installed within or around the pump enclosure.
Communicate to the backend platform over at least a 2G network and must provide a battery life of a minimum of 2 yrs.
Sensor B – For Motorised boreholes
Ability to monitor the functionality of motorised boreholes and report when water is not being pumped.
Ability to monitor and measure water consumption.
Cost of the sensor (including firmware and installation components) cannot exceed N70,000.
Sensor placement location should take security into consideration.
Communicate to the backend platform over at least a 2G network and must provide a minimum battery life of 2 yrs.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE:
Open to ALL and not limited to Engineers, Researchers, Students, IOT enthusiasts and SMEs developing control mechanisms who are resident in Nigeria.
PRIZES:
A cash prize of N500,000 for the best design in each category.
Partnership Summary: GHI would commit up to NGN 4M to the development of the best idea on Hand pump sensor design in return for equity in the product.
JUDGING CRITERIA:
Validity of Design (30pt)
Maintainability of design (20pt)
Ingenuity of Design (i.e. security considerations, installation) (20pt)
Cost of implementation (10pt)
Team member profile and experience (10pt)
Prototype or simulations (bonus points)
SENSOR DESIGN EXPOSITION WEBINAR:
GHI in collaboration with other stakeholders will conduct a virtual session before the deadline of applications, to explain all requirements and expectations regarding the sensor developments. Participants will have the opportunity to make more inquiries during the session.
Date of Webinar: November 15, 2021
Time: 2:00 pm Nigerian Time.
You can fine answers to some questions asked during the webinar here.
HOW TO APPLY:
Submit a proof of concept (POC) of your design using the form below. Applicants can participate in either categories or both. Your slides, at the minimum, should contain sensor type, expected water measurements functionality, power requirements, cost, sensor placement, and a clear illustration or video of the proposed sensor.
