Background:

GHI is currently seeking to engage a dynamic, passionate, result-oriented and self-motivated individual to fill the position of Communications & Engagement Manager as a short-term full time in-house consultant.

As GHI continues to pursue its mission of leveraging technology, innovation & partnerships to foster sustainability of cities and communities, the organization intends to pursue robust communications, public relations and engagement activities through strategic and effective communication, both digital and non-digital. GHI seeks to position itself as a leading nonprofit organization by strengthening its engagement in Nigeria. This includes fostering better communications using print, digital media platforms and PR activities within the country, between other organizations, policy makers and other stakeholders, as well as improve the GHI’s outreach to citizens, civil society and other development partners. It is essential that GHI defines a communications, marketing and branding strategy for all its staff, activities and platforms.

GHI currently has a website, a blog, accounts on Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook. The web and social media are our most public tools for demonstrating the beautiful work we do, openness, transparency and accountability. These platforms provide timely information and serve as a symbol of the organization’s transparency and willingness to work with clients and partners around the country.

GHI also conducts other activities that are seldom branded and marketed to their followers. Providing a strategy, an action plan and managing the quality and presentation of information on these sites and their mobile counterparts is critical to fulfilling the GHI’s development and communications goals.

Scope of Work:

The Communications & Engagement Manager plays a strong communication, content coordination and project management role in the day-to-day operation of GHI external site and social media channels. Among the principal responsibilities of the position are: 

 

  • Develop and implement a communication strategy that includes stakeholder engagement, media outreach and social media content creation.
  • Develop and implement a branding and marking plan for GHI, their work, its employees, etc.
  • Developing standalone PR activities or in conjunction with other activities.
  • Lead and support the information dissemination through context-appropriate media, to provide communities with information on our work, aimed at increased transparency, proactively managing expectations, and building trust.
  • Provide technical development, support, management, and oversight of all media-related activities.
  • Support and evaluate results of communication campaigns with the team.
  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists and key external role-players.
  • Integrating the use of social media and other audience engagement tools as part of GHI’s corporate communications strategy, and advising or leading others in their use to ensure maximum effectiveness
  • Conceptualizing and commissioning multimedia content to support social media outreach
  • Implementation of online campaigns (content marketing) to target key audiences, and measuring success in achieving them 
  • Establishing key performance indicators and reviewing web metrics reports, monitoring and analyzing social media metrics, establishing key performance indicators and sharing results and recommendations to the team
  • Employ the latest social media tools and data-tracking instruments to enhance GHI’s effectiveness in this area and compiling and publishing metrics reports and follow-up recommendations
  • Manage GHI’s website as well as its various social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Linkedin.
  • Ensuring that the social media channels are operated in alignment with appropriate GHI priorities, as well as country communications goals.
  • Ensure the social media channels are active by maintaining regular postings to drive engagement 
  • Preparing and maintaining a blog and social media editorial calendar in coordination with the blog Editor and your Social Media assistant
  • Work closely with technical staff and partners to develop content ideas and related online content in line with the project’s strategy and in support of various project initiatives.
  • Arrange and coordinate press conferences, and plan events.

Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Digital Communications, Social Media Marketing, Journalism, or other related disciplines, and a minimum 2 years of relevant experience
  • Understands project management concepts sufficiently to propose and develop drafts of social media strategies with minimal supervision; can apply standard project management tools, methodologies, and processes; is able to identify and mitigate project risks as well as manage project issues
  • Strong writing skills; able with minimum supervision to prepare and edit simple online communication products and develop drafts of moderately complex products in a clear, concise, and web-friendly style
  • Working knowledge and functional proficiency with online performance measurement and impact analysis tools sufficient to lead or advise others in analyzing usage and trends; ability to research, identify, and map intended audiences and stakeholders, and to leverage communication tools and methodologies (such as online monitoring, web analytics, or other tools) to assess their information needs
  • Demonstrated working knowledge and application of social media communications principles and other web 2.0 technologies, including the ability to modify strategies and products to ensure their most effective use as audience engagement tools
  • Graphic design skills to conceptualize social media visuals like postcards, social media banners and interactive data  
  • Excellent written and spoken command of English
  • Experience working on cross-functional teams
  • Good understanding of the socio-political and cultural environment of Nigeria

Competencies:

  • Communication in International Development – Understanding of international development issues and of the communication needs of key stakeholders, such as bilateral donors, the private sector, foundations, NGOs, and academic institutions.
  • Online Content Editing and Drafting – Ability to draft and edit simple online communications products and develop drafts of moderately complex online communications products with minimal supervision.
  • Online Communication Strategy, Planning, and Execution – Practical experience in a full range of online communications approaches, tools and methodologies; can develop drafts of online communication plans and strategies.
  • Online Production Tools – Proficiency with graphic design principles, industry-standard applications, and web technologies.
  • Online Performance Measurement and Impact Analysis – Proficiency in online usage data, trends and analysis results; setting appropriate KPIs, developing gap analysis, producing reports, and making recommendations for action; can measure the effectiveness of existing online communications strategies or design new ones.

Reporting:

The consultant will report to the Programs Department in Abuja and work closely with the GHI project offices’ communications teams in other states. The consultant should be available to work in Abuja and be prepared to travel occasionally to the locations GHI works in. Note that specific work plan and complete work schedule will be determined after hire.
